Isabel Maria Fidalgo Mateus was born in 1969 in Torre de Moncorvo, North East Portugal. She was a teacher in Portugal for 10 years before moving to the UK in 2001 where she completed a PhD at Birmingham University, in the School of Humanities, and taught Portuguese in the universities of Birmingham and Liverpool.

Isabel currently reconciles her work as a novelist with her research and interpreting activities.
